Annual Vassourinha is a herb that grows up to ½ meter in height. It's variously distributed in many tropical countries and grows in abundance in South America and the Amazon forest. You can also find further north, in some states in the south of the United States like Texas, Florida and Lousiana.

Screening chemical vassourinha revealed that this plant contains some new elements in the classification of phyto flavones and terpenes. Many of the biological properties of active vassourinha, including anticancer, have been attributed to these chemicals.

The anticancer activity of this plant against different cell lines (malignant brain cancer, bone cancer and melanoma) was discovered in 1993 and confirmed again in 2001. In addition, new elements found in vassourinha were also attributed antiviral properties against Herpes simplex I and HIV.
